Sega Rally PS3 Dev: Tilt Controls Rubbish

According to PSM3, the head of Sega Racing Studio doesn’t seem to bad a fan of Sony’s decision to omit rumble in favor of (or so Sony claims) tilt controls in the PS3’s Sixaxis controller.

“Tilt control’s not difficult to do,” says Guy Wilday, head of Sega Racing Studio, on the possibility of tilty-pad gameplay being included in their new version of Sega Rally for PS3. “Fundamentally, though, the whole tilt control thing is rubbish. It’s no compensation for rumble.”

I guess if the graphics are identical in both versions of Sega Rally Revo, that would make the Xbox 360 version better, since it has force feedback (depending on how important FF is to you).

Personally, I think tilt controls for a racing game like Sega Rally (or any other game that requires control accuracy) is not good, since you can’t get the same tight controls with it as you would with an analog. But rumble is more of an extra that’s really not neccessary to play a game, and while it can be implemented in a way that it plays a part in gameplay, it rarely does, and when implemented it doesn’t go past rumbling when you get close to an enemy or hidden item. It’s almost useless.

Now if Sega were to release an Arcade style force feedback usb steering wheel, that would be another story!
