Sega Rally PS3 Dev: Tilt Controls Rubbish

February 15, 2007

According to PSM3, the head of Sega Racing Studio doesn’t seem to bad a fan of Sony’s decision to omit rumble in favor of (or so Sony claims) tilt controls in the PS3’s Sixaxis controller.

“Tilt control’s not difficult to do,” says Guy Wilday, head of Sega Racing Studio, on the possibility of tilty-pad gameplay being included in their new version of Sega Rally for PS3. “Fundamentally, though, the whole tilt control thing is rubbish. It’s no compensation for rumble.”

I guess if the graphics are identical in both versions of Sega Rally Revo, that would make the Xbox 360 version better, since it has force feedback (depending on how important FF is to you).

Personally, I think tilt controls for a racing game like Sega Rally (or any other game that requires control accuracy) is not good, since you can’t get the same tight controls with it as you would with an analog. But rumble is more of an extra that’s really not neccessary to play a game, and while it can be implemented in a way that it plays a part in gameplay, it rarely does, and when implemented it doesn’t go past rumbling when you get close to an enemy or hidden item. It’s almost useless.

Now if Sega were to release an Arcade style force feedback usb steering wheel, that would be another story!

Sega Hires Obsidian Entertainment to Handle Aliens RPG

December 13, 2006

Sega have signed  Obsidian Entertainment, the devs behind Knights of the Old Republic 2 and Neverwinter Nights 2, to develope an RPG based Sega’s recently aquired license to the Aliens movie series.

The strange thing though is that Sega were previously said to have Obsidian co-develope an RPG (code-name Project Georgia) based on new intellectual property for the PC, Xbox360 and PS3. So this could mean they’ve either switched from new IP to Aliens, or they’re actually working on two projects with Sega.

SEGA® of America Inc. and SEGA® Europe Ltd. today announced that Obsidian Entertainment will create a role-playing game based on the Alien film franchise with license from Twentieth Century Fox Licensing & Merchandising. This title will be developed for the next-generation systems and the PC.

Obsidian Entertainment draws upon their wealth of design knowledge creating successful games such as the best-selling Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic II: Sith Lords and the award-winning Neverwinter Nights 2 to bring the Alien franchise to role-playing gamers for the first time. The role playing game will build upon the distinctive look and feel of the original films while utilizing next-generation technology to create an entirely different and unique Alien experience.

“With Obsidian Entertainment’s development pedigree, they were our first choice to bring the Alien franchise to the RPG universe,” said Simon Jeffery, President and COO, SEGA of America, Inc. “They are the only developer for us that could effectively combine the Alien mythology with compelling RPG gameplay to create the ultimate Alien experience.”

“We are thrilled to be working with the great production and publishing teams at SEGA to deliver the ultimate in-depth Alien experience to gamers worldwide,” said Feargus Urquhart, CEO of Obsidian Entertainment. “Building an epic RPG with a license as heralded as the Alien franchise is truly a great honor.”

On the neogaf forums it being said that this game is actually a game that’s been in developement for over a year, by non other than Silicon Knights, known as The Box.

Tilt Controls in Virtua Tennis 3 (PS3)

November 4, 2006

In addition to the traditional control method in Virtua Tennis, there’s also going to be motion sensing controls via the Sixaxis controller for the PS3.

Here’s a picture that shows how the controls work. Personally, looks a bit shoe-horned in and forced, possibley so it can be a bullet point on the back of the game’s case.
