Sonic 2, Golden Axe 2, and More Confirmed for the Virtual Console

April 12, 2007

Some smart snooping on Vook‘s part has revealed a number of unannounced Sega Megadrive/Genesis classics that are coming to the Wii’s Virtual Console. Among them are games like Sonic the Hedgehog 2 and Shining Force. It’s a pretty strong line-up with a number of fantastic games.

Wii Virtual Console > Sega Genesis Collection?

November 23, 2006

Although I haven’t personally played SEGA’s Wii Vitural Console game or Genenis Collection on the PS2, I’m reading online that one emulates better than the other.

Appearently, Genesis Collection has many sound glitches, and it doesn’t display the games in the correct aspect ratio. While the games on the Wii Virtual Console (I almost wrote Virtua Console) to  seem to emulate perfectly and are diplayed in the correct screen ratio. Either way, one should consider that the equivalent number of Genesis/Megadrive VC titles cost more than the price of the Genesis Collection, although on the Wii you can buy them seprately.

Sega of America have announced that the cost to download one of their ten Genesis/Megadrive games on the Wii’s Virtual Console will be $8. This is exactly the same price Nintendo are charging for SNES titles.

Sega Announces Sega Genesis Collection for PS2 and PSP

August 11, 2006

Sega has announced what could possibly be one of the finest classic video game package, if only for the large number of games. Sega Genesis Collection will feature 30(!) Megadrive/Genesis gems and will be available for the PS2 and PSP, with 3 Master System games being unlockable on the PS2.

According to the-magicbox, the list of games include:

  • Alex Kidd: The Enchanted Castle
  • Altered Beast
  • Bonaza Bros.
  • Columns
  • Comix Zone
  • Decap Attack
  • Ecco the Dolphin
  • Ecco: The Tides oF Time
  • Ecco Jr.
  • Eternal Champion
  • Flicky
  • Gain Ground
  • Golden Axe, Golden Axe II, Golden Axe III
  • Phantasy Star II, Phantasy Star III, Phantasy Star IV: The End of Millennium
  • Ristar
  • Shadow Dancer
  • Shinobi III
  • Sonic the Hedgehog, Sonic The Hedgehog 2
  • Super Thunderblade
  • Sword Of Vermilion
  • Vectorman, Vectorman 2
  • Virtua Fighter 2
  • Zaxxon (unlockable in PS2 version only)
  • TAC/Scan (unlockable in PS2 version only)
  • Zektor (unlockable in PS2 version only)

What I’d like to know is how good is the emulation in the PSP version compared to the homebrew Megadrive/Genesis emulator already out there (which is actually quite good with the right settings for a bunch of those games listed), especially if since commercial games are capped at a clock speed of 222mhz. I’m thinking for the PSP they just might be ported as opposed to emulated if they can’t get them working fast enough.
